There is nothing wrong with being different. It's not that you're better than your friends, you just want more for yourself than your surroundings can accomodate. You can either seperate yourself, or stay in the same place and allow them to suck you dry. Step out on faith and reap the benefits that are meant for you to enjoy. Lets face it, there are certain places that just can't take certain people.
