Looking beyond the surface and seeing what lies beneath, helping to reveal the “you” that’s super obvious to you to everyone else. I’ve had my work called a lot of things, but I think ‘new aged feminism’ is the red badge of honor I’ll wear gladly. I’ve seen it all my life, whether in the workplace, or at home with the women in my life: it’s been strong, capable women doing twice as much for half the returns. Getting the necessary results with half the resources or support. I’ve always thought of these women as heroes who never got the recognition they deserved.
In a society that also expects them to maintain (if not be constrained by) feminine norms, they’ve roughed it out and shown men that there’s a New Woman in town 😉
I’ve always been able to reconcile both sides of that coin in my own life, I’ve never felt intimidated by a woman’s strength - I’ve not only admired it but continuously sought it out. Illustrating, and being an active participant in, the process of expressing both of these extremes graphically is a responsibility to the subject, to the person who’s been there and done that, and has the scars to prove it. As a photographer, I have the privilege of
letting those strong personalities and character traits show and be worn as the armor and uniform that they’ve always been for you.
