Friends (5)About Me
For most of my career, I was a writer. I spent months — sometimes years — on a single story. Then it would publish, disappear behind a paywall, and most people would never read it.
The whole time, I was taking pictures. Not because I was a photographer. Because I was a reporter, and photographs are how I remember. I'd look back at my camera roll from a story I filed a year earlier and see the corner of a room, a face, a particular quality of light — and everything would come back. What people said. How they moved. What the air felt like. At some point I started looking at the pictures themselves. Some of them were good. Some of them captured something true about a moment, a place, a person. I don't work in a studio. I don't have a lot of gear. My preference is to find people in their lives and shoot them there — outdoors, in motion, in context. I came up on the idea that if you show up somewhere as a journalist, you don't touch anything. You don't arrange the scene. You capture what's in front of you. That's mostly still how I try to shoot. And I'm also exploring what it means to direct a scene, a model, an idea in an image. What I'm after is intimacy in still images. Insight. The moment that tells you something you wouldn't have known to look for. I travel a bit, am open to all sorts of arrangements for gigs. Mostly looking to expand my portfolio, maybe we can work together. Verified Credits (0)Worked with Nova Keenan Photography? Share your experience and become verified! Add Credits
